Within the cities
Dubai has a modern, driverless metro and tram; taxis and ride-hailing apps are cheap and everywhere across all emirates. Abu Dhabi and Sharjah have extensive bus networks.
Between emirates
Intercity buses link the major emirates inexpensively, but for flexibility — especially to reach the mountains, deserts and east coast — hiring a car is the best option. Roads are excellent and well signposted.
Driving tips
Drive on the right, carry your licence and passport, and watch for speed cameras, which are strictly enforced. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your home licence.
